Did you know that whether you're processing your own pain or somebody else's, the same areas of your brain light up? The brain sees others, particularly those it is compassionate toward, the same way it views itself. This tells me that one of the best ways to feel comforted and happy is to provide comfort and happiness to others.
So what can you do to make others happy? It's actually very simple. Two important ingredients of happiness are:
- Feeling safe
- Feeling worthy
The more you can help others feel emotionally safe by helping them feel worthy, the happier they will be. Here are several steps you can take to help others feel worthy:
- Validate their feelings.
- Try to understand where they're coming from.
- Give them your complete attention.
- Focus on their strengths and their positive characteristics.
These are great first steps for helping others. In turn, because of how your brain works, by helping others, you are helping yourself at the same time.
